V. a) East and West met when King Philip II first dreamt of uniting the
two (Greece and Macedonia) to form an alliance against the Persian
Empire. Alexander the Great, his son, fulfilled his dream by spreading
Greek civilization across a vast empire. Alexander's greatest
accomplishment was blending East and West. He encouraged mixing of
Greek culture with Middle Eastern cultures. Both the Persian Cultures
and the Greek cultures ended up mixing.
b) Helenistic civilization emerged after Alexander's death. It was a
mix of easter and western influences including Persian and Greek
cultures. Alexandria was the center of Helenistic civilization. Many
people came from miles around to trade goods and ideas at Alexandria.
